Late blooming, it turns out, is one of Coolidges lifelong specialties. Though she seems like a natural-born jokester, Coolidge says she didnt develop a real sense of humor until she was in her mid-20s, around the time she started taking improv classes.

Growing up in the Boston suburbs, she was not a theater kid or a cheerleader but a spaced-out oddball who spent long hours staring out the window. Her parents wondered if she had a mental disability and took her into the city for cognitive tests. "The questions were like, Which one of these things is a tree, and which is a spoon?" Coolidge recalls.

At one point she studied drama with teacher Julie Bovasso. "I wanted to be a serious actress and play amazing roles that changed peoples lives," she says. The problem: She could never manage to tap into her emotions. One day a classmate, whod noticed how good she was at imitating her fellow students, suggested she try comedy.

Coolidge almost talked herself out of “The White Lotus,” even though her friend White had written the part for her. Depressed at the height of COVID and feeling unready to work, she had to be persuaded to join the cast by “a really smart, savvy, very blunt friend.”

In Season 1, White pushed Coolidge in what she calls “thispivotalscene” — when Tanya, in mourning, hitches a ride on a boat trip with a pair of newlyweds (Jake Lacy and Alexandra Daddario). Tanya keens while scattering her mother’s ashes, so lost in grief that she’s oblivious to ruining a couple’s romantic moment.

Coolidge vomited throughout the scene, finding the performance through extreme seasickness. “Mike was merciless. I told him to just get a boat on land,” she says. But he persisted. “The people that were stuck on that boat with me and the amount of vomit — it was just really scary.”
